TOP TEN THINGS TO DO WHILE RECOVERING FROM A SURGERY

Hubby is bored out of his mind and is driving himself crazzzzzy. He has a lot of time on his hands and it needed to be filled. Here’s a list to help make the most of your down time after surgery.

1.    Clean off your desk and sort out the pile of mail, bills, catalogues etc., that has been piling up on kitchen counter since before your surgery.
2.    Go sit out on your deck or porch for awhile each day and get some fresh air, pray, meditate and animal watch while enjoying a beverage
3.    Download music & movies(legally) from the Internet; have more music & Movies than you could ever utilize in 2 lifetimes.
4.    Read all the magazines and books that are piling up for than rainy day.  The rainy days are here.
5.    Play classic board games with your friends and family – Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue, Risk…  Or Play Independent games-Solitaire Angry Birds, Cube World, Owl Boy, Ibb and Obb, Mega Run, Mega Jump…
6.    Watch Old movies from the 40’s – 60’s.  These movies are said to be more uncomplicated and leisurely to watch.  Especially great if you are on several medications.

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better Sleep
From Lifehacker.com

For something we spend half our life doing, a lot of us are pretty awful at sleeping. Here are our top 10 tips for falling asleep faster, getting quality rest, and waking up easier in the morning.

10. Prepare a Worthy Bed

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepWhile your bed probably isn't the primary cause of insomnia, snoring, or other sleep problems, it can certainly contribute to your comfort at night. Make sure you're using the right pillow based on your sleep type, and when it comes time to buy a new mattress, make sure you shop smart (and don't get fleeced). Once you know it isn't your bed, you can start getting to the bottom of your sleep issues. Photo by Daehyun Park.

9. Eat Better

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepWhat you eat can greatly affect how you sleep, even during the early half of the day.Eat breakfast first thing in the morning to sleep better at night, and make sure it's a big one. After eating well throughout the day, avoid eating spicy or junk foods at night, and instead choose something that will help you drift off. And remember: no booze! Not onlywill it not help you get to sleep, it'll cause you to snore all night, too. Photo by D Sharon Pruitt.

8. Wake Up Pleasantly, Not Roughly

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepThe days of the ever-annoying *bzzt*-*bzzt*-*bzzt* alarms are over. Instead of being jerked awake by an old clock, consider getting a smart alarm app for your phone, like our favorites for iPhone and Android. Then, try waking yourself up more comfortably. If you need a bit more of a push, of course, we've got more methods for manipulating yourself to wake up. And, whenever possible, do it without stimulantscaffeine can wreak havoc with your brain and bodyPhoto by Lars Plougmann.

6. Fix Your Sleeping Position

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepYou may not realize it over the course of the night, but your sleeping position could not be great for your body—or the quality of shuteye you get. Find out which sleeping style is best for you, and make a conscious effort to fix it when you go to bed, and you'll wake up feeling more refreshed in the morning.

5. Cool Yourself Off at Night

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepCooling down your body temperature makes a huge difference in how easy it is to fall asleep, but that can be hard to do when it's hot outside (or when your significant other has body temperature nearing the surface of the sun). From DIY air conditioners to cooling pillows to more extreme methods,we've got the lowdown on staying cool while you sleep. Just make sure you don't wake up freezing in the morning—that's never a fun way to start the day. Photo by Rob.

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepNot everyone needs the same exact amount of sleep, but with a little trial and error, you should find your sweet spot pretty easily.Count back 7.5 hours from when you need to wake up, and make sure you get to bed at that time—then adjust accordingly. Of course, you could also try a webapp like Sleepyti.me to help you calculate the perfect number of hours, too.

3. Learn to Nap Like a Pro

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepIf you feel yourself getting drowsy during the day, you might be tempted to nap—but that can be disastrous for your sleep schedule if done incorrectly. Learn to master the power nap, then calculate the best time to nap and crank one out then (if you have a hammock, all the better). Tumeric-not just a tasty ingredient!!

How many of you see the new year as a new opportunity to decrease your waist?  I personally have been guilty of thinking the only time to start fresh and new is in a "New Year".  Recently, I turned my ankle, going downstairs causing a sprain. Just one week later I foud myself at the gym with my partner in blogging crime.  We spent an hour on the treadmill walking/running.  The workout felt great, but a few hours later my ankle and knees were on fire.  For a couple of days, I could not stop focusing on the discomfort I was having and became obsessed with finding an alternative to OTC (over the counter) medications for pain reduction.  I found some tumeric capsules in my medicine basket, which I had obviously taken once or twice, but never continuously. (Probably another one of my--I'm going to get healthy kicks.) I decided to start taking it again and can hardly believe the improvement I have exprencied.  I am a total believer!! This is a miracle herbal supplement for pain/inflammation reduction.

A list of some of the many health benefits:

1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of   existing prostate cancer.
3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.
7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.
8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.
13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.
17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.
18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.
19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.
20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules 2-3 times daily. I have been taking 900mg  3x daily-not recommended for everyone.(I only absorb 80% of the nutrients I digest!!!

Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it's fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.

Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.
