Deep Fried Foods at the Oklahoma State Fair

The Oklahoma State Fair is over the 100 year mark by 7 years.  Wow to be over 100 years in existence and still an Oklahoma annual favorite. With everything you love about the fair from crazy fried food and rides to events and entertainment, the 2013 Oklahoma State Fair runs from September 12th through the 22nd.

My family has been coming to the OK State Fair for 9 years now and If you're not on a ride at the fair there's a good chance you're eating some good old fried fair food or in the exhibit halls.
From corn dogs to turkey legs to chocolate coved bacon to cotton candy and funnel cakes...the food is what lures us and many others to the fairgrounds. And many fairgoers say a day with the family at the fair isn't cheap.  A cashier at our local grocery store said he spent $150.00 between admission, food and rides for him and two sons.  It costs $5.00 for Parking and Admission is $9.00
I clearly remember when we moved here in 2004 admission prices were $6.00 and food prices were affordable.  You could get like a meal deal for $5.00.  It wasn't a lot of food but you had a plate with a couple of items.   Carnival rides had a promotion.  Bring a Dr Pepper can and save $8 off the price of a carnival ride wristband. ($20 without a can $12 with a can).  Now rides are $35.00 for wristbands.
The cost of most fair food in 2013 ranges anywhere from three to ten dollars. And at some places re-fills on drinks will cost two to three dollars. Now, depending on which vendor you go to... fair favorites like cotton candy could cost you five dollars and larger bags could cost eight dollars.  Vendors set the costs.
Prices really have made a difference, with less options bought and tried in our family.  It seems like when folks come to the fair they already expect to pay the higher prices for food, but these are getting ridiculous was the general opinion we heard.  And some folks say the fair is just a once a year thing, so they say they might as well just accept the higher prices and enjoy the good and crazy food but in moderation by sharing.  Some goers eat a meal before and just come for desserts like fried oreos, fried twinkles, fried beer, fried PB&J, fried butter, fried coke, fried and batter dipped bacon, fried chicken with cornflakes, fried Pop-Tarts, fried jelly Beans, fried... whatever you want.
It's high, but we just bite the bullet and keep going because i love the Auto show, Home show type vendors (tornado shelters is what we looked at) the 4-H displays, Fine Arts, Food competitions, Largest Pumpkin, best bread, cake, cookies, pie, canned vegetables, canned pickles, canned peaches, jams, jellies, Decorative Painting, Hand Painted Furniture, Collections, Crafts, Miniatures like Doll houses, Trash 2 Treasure: Recycled Crafts, Egg Art , Woodcarving, Woodworking and Woodburning, Let’s Celebrate , Stamping and Scrapbooking , Leathercrafting, Wood Turning, Beadwork, Polymer Clay Creations , Basketweaving, Dev. Disabled Crafts, Sticky Fingers: Duct Tape Creations, Fancy Feet, Best Dressed Pumpkin Contest, Breast Cancer Awareness: Beautiful Bras, Scrapbook pages, Greeting Cards and other exhibitions for livestock, horses, goats challenges for ribbons and my favorite People watching.
Hubby, Doug and I ended up spending $58.00.  Despite the higher costs, we plan to keep coming to the fair so we can have a good time and enjoy what we can afford of the fair food.  Hopefully they'll have some coupons next year.

Top 10: Odd Facts

Top 10: Odd Facts in Creative Charts

I Love this crazzZZzzzy Stuff.

LETUNE

Faith and Poverty

The correlation between faith and poverty is oddly strong in the world, as this chart points out. With the U.S as a notable exception. So the conclusion is: The poorer you are the more religious you are, unless you’re American in case you believe in God no matter financial status.

Map: Online Communities

Communities rise and fall, and total membership numbers are no longer a good measure of a community’s current size and health. This updated map uses size to represent total social activity in a community – that is, how much talking, playing, sharing, or other socializing happens there. By xkcd.

Music Preference by Gender

During an internship at Last.fm, Joachim Van Herwegen explored the available data to see how listening preferences varied from gender and age. But rather than putting together a lame graph in excel his finalized his research with what looks like one big tag cluster. Visually pleasing indeed. Thanks Joachim!

Emotional Cities – How are you today?

A project that measures a mood of the city population and displays it as a chart of light on the side of a building. In Stockholm, Sweden this has become reality through the initiative Emotional Cities. Anyone can enter the website and answer how he or she feels today on a five colored scale. The daily result is then projected on four of the five Hötorg-buildings in the color that represents the mood most city citizens are in.

Swear Word Modifiers

Webcomic xkcd is a frequent contributor of not only sarcastic comic strips but also the occasional informative graphic. This one is based on Google hits and measured frequency with which various adjectives are intensified with obscenities.

Research Areas of Mad Scientists

Since Mary Shelley created Frankenstein just about 200 years ago, science fiction has seen its fare share of mad scientists running all kinds of crazy projects. Annalee Newitz @ io9 has done sci-fi nuts all over the world the favor of finding out what kind of research these mad scientists been doing over the years.

Marijuana Price Map

Ever wonder if your dealer’s pricing is just? Not to worry, Paul Kedrosky over at Infectious Greed has gathered all the data on a Google Maps overlay for you to ponder when sky high.

Men’s waistlines by brand

God knows how self-conscious men are about their waistlines.  Here are ten clothing brands that have steeped to a new low by tricking its male consumers into thinking their slimmer than they actually are. Just outrageous.

Can We Date?

Love is a hard thing to predict. But MorningNews.org has solved a small piece of the mystery that is love. When asked by a reader if it was OK to date  his brother’s wife’s cousin an amusing flow chart was created.

Tornados Ravaged Oklahoma. Benevolence, Recovery & Rebuilding.

WHAT you may NOT KNOW is that Multiple tornados touched down in Oklahoma on May 19, 2013 in Carney, Shawnee (Brad Pitt~ Born), Dale, Bethel Acres, Norman, Luther, Lake Thunderbird. On Monday it hit Newcastle. We live 1.5 miles from the end of the devastating tornado that hit Moore, Oklahoma and demolished 12,000 homes and businesses and 5 schools with 377 injuries and 24 reported deaths.  It's residence and people close to the site are still coming to grips with the full scale of this massive EF-5 Tornados Lawnmower effect.  Homes were destroyed beyond recognition.  Others had nothing to come back to not even a concrete pad.  Real lives were lost.  You cannot imagine the feelings of loss and desperation here.  Several links are posted below for pictures/ info on each tornado.

As the dust cleared in Oklahoma, staggering stories of heroism have came to light:Teachers saved students by covering them with their bodies, and stayed with students until they could be located by their parents. Rescuers even had to pull a car off one teacher who was protecting her students. In re-telling the story to KFOR, a rescuer broke down in tears. "Good job, teach," he said.
Still more first responders came to the immediate aid of students trapped inside ruined buildings. Oklahoma State police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said he witnessed amazing acts of bravery at Plaza Towers Elementary. "They literally were lifting walls up and kids were coming out," he told the Chicago Tribune. "They pulled kids out from under cinder blocks without a scratch on them." http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/05/22/oklahomo-tornado-help-kindness-charity-good-deeds

In times of tragedy, there is always hope, and hope comes in all forms. For the residents of Oklahoma, hope started with hero teachers, neighbors, firemen and women, police, National guard, volunteers both young and old. And now through the media every part of the country is sending aid, prayers and gestures of good will. And We thank you.  If you would like to go further with your support direct to the needs of the people.  Here's what is needed.

REMEMBER MOOD RINGS???

The liquid crystal inside the mood ring generally displayed a neutral color when it was at the normal body temperature. Fluctuations in that temperature created a whole rainbow of colors, and each ring came with a handy chart to help the wearer (or interested observer) decipher their meanings. I like this list better. The most comprehensive list I have ever seen on colors!!!
Oooooh, How I love this stuff.  I am Bright Blue today and You?

Looking for Ideas...

Stop for a moment... and think about the ways that a shoulder comes into play during the day. You use your shoulder to brush teeth, wash face, put lotion on, lift a cup of joe, go potty, get dressed, brush your hair, open cheese or mail, write, open a door, drive, hug your peeps, peel an egg, text, etc.  I learned from this surgery that MY shoulder is an extremely busy joint, and there is not much that I do with regards to the use of hands/arms, that does not, in some way, use my shoulder as well. That being said THANK YOU to all those who helped me this week. It’s been tough.

I am keeping myself busy with my hubby's list of activities from a previous blog posting of ours...

Duck Dynasty Review

Duck Dynasty Review
REDNECK shows are HOT right now.

I like the redneck hilarity of Duck Dynasty.  Not really a show I thought I'd even turn on and be belly laughing too.  But you just can't help it.  Now this is reality t.v., I’ll watch.  It's just some funny crazy day to day annoyances that goes on and it is stuff that boys do get into.  It is kind of a rags to riches Story.  I really don’t want to spoil it for you.  What’s cool is at the end that they sit,  eat together and pray together too. I'm hooked on the good ol boys. It makes me feel good about real people.  Just like us at Real Housewives...http://sillyhousewives.blogspot.com

It is helpful to know the cast of characters before watching to see the chain of command…
Willie Robertson, CEO - son of Phil and Miss Kay

Phil Robertson is the Dad, he created the Duck Commander duck call in 1972

Jase (Jason) Robertson, COO Is Willie's brother

Si (Silas Merritt) Robertson is Phil's younger brother

Miss Kay Robertson is Phil's wife

Korie Robertson is Willie's wife

Martin is an employee of Duck Commander

John Godwin is an employee at Duck Commander

Jep Robertson is Phil and Miss Kay's youngest son.

Missy Robertson is Jase's wife

Jessica Robertson is Jep's wife

Happy viewing.  Would love to hear your comments.  Tina

TOP 10 THINGS TO DO RECOVERING FROM SURGERY

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO WHILE RECOVERING FROM A SURGERY

Hubby is bored out of his mind and is driving himself crazzzzzy. He has a lot of time on his hands and it needed to be filled. Here’s a list to help make the most of your down time after surgery.

1.    Clean off your desk and sort out the pile of mail, bills, catalogues etc., that has been piling up on kitchen counter since before your surgery.
2.    Go sit out on your deck or porch for awhile each day and get some fresh air, pray, meditate and animal watch while enjoying a beverage
3.    Download music & movies(legally) from the Internet; have more music & Movies than you could ever utilize in 2 lifetimes.
4.    Read all the magazines and books that are piling up for than rainy day.  The rainy days are here.
5.    Play classic board games with your friends and family – Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue, Risk…  Or Play Independent games-Solitaire Angry Birds, Cube World, Owl Boy, Ibb and Obb, Mega Run, Mega Jump…
6.    Watch Old movies from the 40’s – 60’s.  These movies are said to be more uncomplicated and leisurely to watch.  Especially great if you are on several medications.
7.    Pare down your list of friends on Facebook.  Psychologists suggests taking a look at your friends and "defriending" those you only consider acquaintances or those who stalk your wall and rarely make comments or likes.  Then write on the walls of all those that are left.
8.    Enjoy some games you already have from Xbox or Nintendo, Gameboy, Sony PSP, or Wii.
9.    Put your financials in order with a working budget and some goals to work towards.
10.Set a progressive workout goal (e.g. go for 2 minutes longer each day) that is OK'd by your doctor. Chart your progress.

Top 10 For A better Nights Sleep ZzzzZZZzzzzz

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better Sleep

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better Sleep
From Lifehacker.com

For something we spend half our life doing, a lot of us are pretty awful at sleeping. Here are our top 10 tips for falling asleep faster, getting quality rest, and waking up easier in the morning.

10. Prepare a Worthy Bed

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepWhile your bed probably isn't the primary cause of insomnia, snoring, or other sleep problems, it can certainly contribute to your comfort at night. Make sure you're using the right pillow based on your sleep type, and when it comes time to buy a new mattress, make sure you shop smart (and don't get fleeced). Once you know it isn't your bed, you can start getting to the bottom of your sleep issues. Photo by Daehyun Park.

9. Eat Better

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepWhat you eat can greatly affect how you sleep, even during the early half of the day.Eat breakfast first thing in the morning to sleep better at night, and make sure it's a big one. After eating well throughout the day, avoid eating spicy or junk foods at night, and instead choose something that will help you drift off. And remember: no booze! Not onlywill it not help you get to sleep, it'll cause you to snore all night, too. Photo by D Sharon Pruitt.

8. Wake Up Pleasantly, Not Roughly

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepThe days of the ever-annoying *bzzt*-*bzzt*-*bzzt* alarms are over. Instead of being jerked awake by an old clock, consider getting a smart alarm app for your phone, like our favorites for iPhone and Android. Then, try waking yourself up more comfortably. If you need a bit more of a push, of course, we've got more methods for manipulating yourself to wake up. And, whenever possible, do it without stimulantscaffeine can wreak havoc with your brain and bodyPhoto by Lars Plougmann.

7. Exercise in the Morning

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepExercising in the morning or afternoon—not at night—can help deepen your sleep and make sure you fall asleep quicker, according to a study by the National Sleep Foundation. If you aren't much of an exerciser, there's no better time than now to upgrade your health and fitness routine than now. Photo by lu-lu.

6. Fix Your Sleeping Position

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepYou may not realize it over the course of the night, but your sleeping position could not be great for your body—or the quality of shuteye you get. Find out which sleeping style is best for you, and make a conscious effort to fix it when you go to bed, and you'll wake up feeling more refreshed in the morning.

5. Cool Yourself Off at Night

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepCooling down your body temperature makes a huge difference in how easy it is to fall asleep, but that can be hard to do when it's hot outside (or when your significant other has body temperature nearing the surface of the sun). From DIY air conditioners to cooling pillows to more extreme methods,we've got the lowdown on staying cool while you sleep. Just make sure you don't wake up freezing in the morning—that's never a fun way to start the day. Photo by Rob.

4. Get the Perfect Amount of Sleep

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepNot everyone needs the same exact amount of sleep, but with a little trial and error, you should find your sweet spot pretty easily.Count back 7.5 hours from when you need to wake up, and make sure you get to bed at that time—then adjust accordingly. Of course, you could also try a webapp like Sleepyti.me to help you calculate the perfect number of hours, too.

3. Learn to Nap Like a Pro

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepIf you feel yourself getting drowsy during the day, you might be tempted to nap—but that can be disastrous for your sleep schedule if done incorrectly. Learn to master the power nap, then calculate the best time to nap and crank one out then (if you have a hammock, all the better). And, if you really want tomake the most of your napstry a caffeine nap to reboot your brain in the middle of the day. Photo by Dion Hinchcliffe.

2. Cultivate the Perfect Evening Routine

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepAs the end of the day rolls around, you should be winding yourself down for bed to get the best sleep possible. If you really want to fall asleep easily, take some time tocultivate the perfect evening routine—some light reading, a nice bubble bath, andsomething that doesn't involve a backlit screen—to fall asleep quickly and keep your energy up the next day. Photo by Chelsea Oakes.

1. Get Some Help From Technology

Top 10 Tricks for Getting Better SleepIf your sleep cycle seems beyond repair, you might need to get some outside help...from our favorite therapist, technology. From cheap methods like sleep tracking apps to full-on sleep tracking gadgets like theWakemate, we've tested a number of technological sleep aids and found them to be rather helpful. If you're really motivated, you can reboot your entire sleep cycle and get the rest you deserve, and your midday self will thank you for it.
